Adjoint-Based Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization – National Institute of Aerospace

Adjoint-Based Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization

Adjoint-Based Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization

Objectives

  • Develop novel adjoint-based optimization methods for turbulent flows, mesh adaptation, multidisciplinary design, etc.
  • Demonstrate these methods for practical aerospace applications

Why it Matters

Computational method for multidisciplinary design are needed to reduce time and cost of design cycles and to complement and assist the human expertise in finding better designs

Recent Accomplishments

  • Developed an adjoint-based sensitivity analysis for unsteady flows and applied for optimization of full rotorcraft, wind turbine, biologically inspired flapping wing configurations
  • Developed an adjoint-based methodology for multidisciplinary optimization; led to a unique tool for sonic boom mitigation
  • Demonstrated preliminary multidisciplinary sensitivity analysis involving aeroacoustic, aeroelasticity, and multi-body dynamics
